Those white, cloudy spots on your windows? They're not dirt. They're mineral deposits from Toronto's hard water — and they get worse the longer you ignore them.
Here's everything you need to know: what causes them, how to remove them, and how to prevent them from coming back.
Why Toronto Windows Get Hard Water Stains
💧 The Science
Toronto tap water contains 124 mg/L of total dissolved solids (TDS) — mostly calcium carbonate, magnesium, and trace silica. When water hits your window and evaporates, the water is gone but the minerals stay behind.
One drop of Toronto tap water leaves 0.124mg of minerals on your glass. Multiply that by every raindrop, every sprinkler overspray, every morning dew droplet — over months, you get a visible white film that eventually etches into the glass itself.
Common Causes in Toronto:
- Sprinkler overspray — the #1 cause. Irrigation systems hitting windows deposit minerals with every cycle
- Rain runoff from concrete/brick — water running off masonry picks up extra calcium before hitting glass
- Morning condensation — dew forms on glass nightly, evaporates by 10 AM, leaves minerals behind
- DIY window cleaning with tap water — ironically, cleaning windows with a hose makes them dirtier over time
- Construction dust + rain — concrete dust from nearby construction dissolves in rain, creating calcium-rich water on your windows
How to Remove Hard Water Stains: 4 Methods
Method 1: White Vinegar (Light Stains)
Best for: Stains less than 3 months old
- Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar
- Spray generously on stained glass
- Let sit for 5-10 minutes (don't let it dry)
- Scrub with a non-scratch white pad or microfiber cloth
- Rinse with clean water (purified/distilled if you have it)
- Dry immediately with a clean microfiber towel
Cost: ~$3. Effectiveness: 60-70% of light stains.
Method 2: CLR or Lime-Away (Moderate Stains)
Best for: Stains 3-12 months old
- Dilute CLR 50/50 with water
- Apply to stained area with a cloth (not spray — avoid frames and seals)
- Let sit 2-3 minutes only
- Scrub gently with a non-scratch pad
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
- Repeat if needed (never leave CLR on glass longer than 5 minutes)
Method 3: Cerium Oxide Polish (Heavy Stains)
Best for: Stains over 12 months old that have started to etch glass
- Mix cerium oxide powder with water to form a paste
- Apply to glass with a buffing pad or orbital polisher on low speed
- Work in small sections, keeping the surface wet
- Wipe clean and inspect — repeat as needed
This is essentially glass polishing. It removes a microscopic layer of glass to get below the etched minerals. Effective but time-intensive. Best left to professionals for large areas.
Method 4: Professional Purified Water Cleaning (All Stains + Prevention)
Best for: Removing stains AND preventing them from returning
Professional cleaners using purified water (like our ClearCoat™ system) do two things at once: the purified water dissolves existing mineral deposits during cleaning, and because the water has 0mg/L minerals, it leaves zero new residue behind.
| Method | Cost | Best For | Prevents Return? |
|---|---|---|---|
| White vinegar | $3 | Light stains (<3 months) | No |
| CLR / Lime-Away | $8-$12 | Moderate stains (3-12 mo) | No |
| Cerium oxide polish | $20-$40 DIY | Etched glass (12+ mo) | No |
| Purified water cleaning | $179-$449 | All stains + ongoing prevention | Yes ✓ |
How to Prevent Hard Water Stains (Permanently)
- Redirect sprinklers — the single biggest thing you can do. Adjust heads so they don't hit windows. This alone eliminates 50%+ of staining
- Clean with purified water only — never wash windows with a garden hose. You're depositing more minerals with every rinse
- Clean at least twice a year — minerals that sit on glass for more than 6 months start to chemically bond with the silica in the glass. At that point, they're etched in permanently
- Apply a hydrophobic coating — products like Rain-X or professional-grade glass sealant cause water to bead and roll off instead of sitting and evaporating on the surface
- Trim overhanging branches — sap drips attract moisture and accelerate mineral buildup in those spots
Why Purified Water Cleaning is the Toronto Solution
Here's the problem with traditional squeegee cleaning in Toronto: the squeegee removes the water, but it doesn't remove the minerals already bonded to the glass. And any rinse water left on the glass is still Toronto tap water — 124mg/L of minerals drying right back onto your windows.
ClearCoat™ purified water starts at 0mg/L. When it touches existing mineral deposits, it actually pulls minerals off the glass through osmotic action (pure water wants to equalize with the minerals on the surface). Then it dries perfectly clean because there's nothing left behind.
It's the difference between mopping a floor with dirty water vs. clean water. Same effort, completely different result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can hard water stains become permanent?
Yes. After 6-12 months, dissolved minerals chemically bond with silica in the glass (a process called "glass corrosion"). At that point, the stain is literally part of the glass and can only be removed by polishing off a layer of glass surface.
Will a Brita filter make good window cleaning water?
No. Brita filters remove chlorine and some contaminants but don't significantly reduce dissolved minerals (TDS). You need a reverse osmosis or deionization system to get water to 0mg/L — which is exactly what professional purified water systems use.
Do hard water stains damage windows?
Long-term, yes. Mineral etching weakens the glass surface, makes it more susceptible to scratching, and can eventually cause permanent cloudiness that no amount of cleaning will fix. Prevention is much cheaper than replacement — a single pane of double-glazed window costs $200-$500 to replace.
Why do some windows stain worse than others?
South and west-facing windows stain fastest because they get the most sun exposure. Sun accelerates evaporation, leaving minerals behind faster. Windows near sprinklers, gardens, or driveways also stain more from splash-back.
