Here's a stat that should scare you: dryer lint is the leading cause of home laundry fires. Over 15,000 dryer fires occur annually in North America, causing $200+ million in property damage. The scary part — nearly all of them are preventable with a $100-$200 annual cleaning that takes 30-60 minutes.

6 Warning Signs — Clean NOW
Why Toronto Vents Clog Faster
- Longer vent runs: Toronto's building stock includes a lot of 2-storey homes where the dryer is in the basement — vent runs can be 20-35 feet with multiple bends. Each 90° bend = 5 feet of additional effective length. A 25ft run with 3 bends = effective 40ft — lint accumulates fast.
- Bird nests: Toronto's house sparrows and starlings LOVE dryer vents — warm, protected, draft-free. They build nests in the vent exit, completely blocking airflow. The dryer heats the nest material, creating a fire hazard. Most common in spring (March-May) when birds are nesting.
- Winter usage spike: Torontonians do more laundry in winter (heavier clothes, more layers) and can't line-dry. November-March is peak dryer usage — and peak lint production.
- Flex duct traps: Many Toronto homes use ribbed flexible duct (foil or vinyl) instead of smooth rigid duct. The ribs trap lint at every ridge. Smooth rigid duct is up to 80% better at self-clearing lint. If your vent uses flex duct, upgrade to rigid — it's a $50-$100 DIY project that dramatically reduces fire risk.
How Vent Cleaning Works
- Disconnect dryer from vent duct
- Insert rotating brush or compressed air tool through vent from inside
- Push lint through to the exterior exit (or vacuum from both ends)
- Clean exterior vent cover — remove accumulated lint, bird nesting material, and debris
- Inspect duct condition — check for crushed sections, disconnected joints, vinyl duct (replace if found)
- Test airflow — run dryer and verify strong exhaust at exterior vent
How MANTLE Helps
MANTLE doesn't currently offer interior dryer vent cleaning (it requires specialized rotary brush equipment different from our window/pressure tools). But we help in two ways:
- ✅ Exterior vent cover cleaning: We clean the outside dryer vent flap/cover as part of every pressure washing package. We remove lint buildup, bird nesting material, and debris blocking the exterior opening.
- ✅ Spot and flag: During exterior cleaning, we check dryer vents for blocked flaps, bird nests, and crushed duct visible from outside. If we see a problem, we flag it and recommend professional vent cleaning.
- ✅ Referral: We maintain a list of trusted dryer vent cleaners in Scarborough and the GTA for referral when needed.
